This is not a revelation, people have been deriding this movie since it came out. Hell, the movie won seven Razzies and had a comedy routine based on it. But since I have had a desire to see it since it came out a decade ago (for the nakedness when going through puberty and later, for the bad-movie irony of it) so I figured I should get it over with.
So, as I was saying, Showgirls is a bad movie. Really quite bad actually. The nudity is so omnipresent that it is not at all erotic and actually boring. The plot really doesn’t have an arc, nothing seems to have been gained at the end of the movie. The dancing is really not very good, Elizabeth Berkley looks like she is spasming a lot throughout the movie; she is athletic and flexible, not a sexy or adept dancer. The concept that a topless review could have a big name star, someone being interview by the pre-internet press is ridiculous. Also, everybody in the movie is a dick.
Nobody more so than the main character Elizabeth Berkley. She is never-ever pleasant throughout the whole movie, clothed or unclothed. Her dancing is spasmodic and her sex scene more so. None of this is the reason why I really didn’t like the movie.
That reason was Elizabeth Berkley’s reaction to things she didn’t like. If someone were to anger her or insult her or argue with her or present her with a tough choice, she would whip her head around and grab her jacket and haughtily stalk out of the door. This happens literally a dozen times. This is understandable, since everybody in the movie is a dick and all act like it. But this move of hers not only got more and more ridiculous everytime we had to see it, it also deflated any and all of the conflicts in the movie. Because there was a chance to see some sparks or some resolution and then…head turn, jacket grab, stalk-out-the-door. It is practically a dance move.
