Hostel: Part II

You know, for a sequel to one of the originator's of the current crop of "torture porn" brand horror movies, there wasn't that much ickyness in this movie. Instead they take a somewhat refreshing turn by following the killers and victims on their long separate trips until they meet. This does something almost no slasher movie ever does, and gives the bad guys some real personality and backstory. I do find fault with the final act, which is smooshed down to 15 minutes and the bad guys only get their comeuppance for an almost afterthought-like 2 minutes.
Gangs of the Dead
I loves me some genre mashups, so a mix of L.A. gangs and zombies seemed to hold some promise. But it doesn't. Instead we spent what seemed like hours of gang dudes talking all gangster to each other (vato, ese', and homey are repeatedly all in the same sentence) and wandering around and talking and wandering around an abandoned warehouse with zombies outside. Occasionally they do something stupid, and die stupidly. Terribly boring.Motorcycle Diaries

As a travelogue, this really made me want to travel around South America and experience some of the fantastic sights and sounds and cities and people. As a story of two friends traveling around and gaining life experiences...it is somewhat less of a triumph. If one of the two main characters didn't grow up to be Che Guevara, nobody would care about this movie. As it is, having the point of sustaining interest be something that never takes place in the film leaves us somewhat looking for a point to this movie.

Vimanarama
Just a full color orgasm of a comic book. An invasion of techno demons held off by ancient proto-Hindu literal Space Gods which is firmly grounded in the petty romantic and personal problems of the modern British Muslim main character. Excellent.
Kings
Goddamn is there nobody better suited to the role of king than Ian McShane.
